Shipping is not just a logistics detail — it's a major cost driver that can make or break your unit economics. Here's everything you need to know, in plain English.

The Four Shipping Methods at a Glance

Express Courier: Fast, Simple, Expensive

Express (DHL, UPS, FedEx, TNT) is door-to-door: the courier picks up from our factory and delivers to your address. No customs broker needed on your end — the courier handles clearance.

When to Use Express

• Sample orders: 5-10 boxes for evaluation — always Express. Cost: $30-60, 3-5 days.
• First small order: 50-200 boxes to test the market before committing to sea freight volume.
• Urgent restock: You sold out faster than expected and need inventory NOW.
• Lightweight products: Lash boxes are light (~40-60g each). Express rates are weight-based, so lashes ship relatively affordably vs. heavy cosmetics.

Express Cost Reality Check

Express rates to major markets for lash shipments (rates fluctuate; these are Q2 2026 estimates):

• China → USA: $6-8/kg (5-15kg), $5-7/kg (15-50kg)
• China → UK/EU: $7-9/kg (5-15kg), $5.50-7.50/kg (15-50kg) — note: EU now charges import VAT at checkout for orders under €150
• China → UAE/Saudi: $8-11/kg (5-15kg) — higher due to fewer direct routes

Air Freight: The Middle Ground

Air freight is NOT the same as Express. Your goods fly on a commercial airline (not a courier plane), land at the destination airport, and you need a customs broker to clear them through customs and arrange local delivery.

The Hidden Costs of Air Freight

Air freight quotes are often misleadingly low because they only cover the airport-to-airport leg. Real total cost includes:

• Air freight rate: $3-5/kg from China to US/EU (the quoted price)
• Fuel surcharge: +15-25% of freight rate
• Security surcharge: +$0.15-0.25/kg
• Customs brokerage fee: $75-150 flat (your broker)
• Customs bond: $50-100 (US) — required for shipments over $2,500 value
• Local delivery: Airport → your warehouse: $100-300 depending on distance
• Duty & tax: Lashes typically 0-6.5% duty depending on country + local VAT

When you add it all up, air freight often costs 60-80% of Express — but requires far more administrative work on your end.

Sea Freight: The Volume Play

For orders of 200kg+ (roughly 4,000+ lash boxes), sea freight is the only economically viable option. But it's slow — and you need to plan around that.

LCL vs FCL

• LCL (Less than Container Load): Your shipment shares a container with other cargo. Good for 200kg–2,000kg. Cost: $40-80 per cubic meter.
• FCL (Full Container Load): You rent the entire 20ft or 40ft container. Only makes sense at 10,000+ kg (200,000+ lash boxes). Cost: $2,500-4,500 for a 20ft container to US West Coast.

DDP Shipping: The "Make It Easy" Option

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is not a separate shipping method — it's a pricing model where the shipper (or factory) handles everything: freight, insurance, customs clearance, duty, and tax. You pay one all-inclusive price, and the goods arrive at your door — no customs broker, no surprise fees, no paperwork.

Why Lash Brands Love DDP

• Predictable cost: The price you're quoted is the price you pay. No "your shipment is stuck in customs and you owe $500 in storage fees" surprises.
• Zero paperwork: The factory or freight forwarder handles the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, and customs declaration.
• Faster clearance: DDP shipments are pre-cleared — customs processing is usually faster because duties are prepaid.

The DDP Tradeoff

DDP costs 15-30% more than arranging shipping yourself. You're paying for convenience. For first-time importers or brands that value simplicity over squeezing every cent, DDP is worth the premium. Customs: What You Need to Know

False eyelashes are a customs-friendly product. They're lightweight, non-hazardous, non-perishable, and rarely flagged for inspection. But there are still rules:

HS Code: 6704.19.0000 — "Wigs, false beards, eyebrows and eyelashes... of synthetic textile materials." This is the harmonized code used globally. Your commercial invoice must include this code.

Packaging for Safe Shipping

Lash boxes are small and light, but they're also crushable. A lash tray that arrives bent or crushed is unsellable. Key packaging rules:

• Individual poly-bagging: Each lash box should be sealed in a clear poly bag to protect against moisture and scuffing during transit.
• Master carton quality: Use double-wall corrugated cartons, not single-wall. The cost difference is cents per carton; the damage-prevention value is enormous.
• Carton weight limit: Keep master cartons under 15kg. Heavier cartons are more likely to be dropped, and couriers charge overweight surcharges above 30kg.
• Void fill: No empty space inside the carton. Fill gaps with kraft paper or air pillows. Movement inside the carton = damaged product.
